Wakefield Connect to Support
Wakefield council's guide to Care, Support and Wellbeing in Wakefield
We’re a small local charity, not affiliated with any other charity so we are totally funded by donations and grants.

Currently, we open two days a week, Wednesday and Friday afternoons. There are reminiscence sessions, visiting speakers e.g. solicitors on the legal aspects of dementia such as Power of Attorney and making a will, and many organisations which offer support for carers and people living with dementia. Admiral Nurses and Dementia Advisers from the Alzheimer’s Society pop in regularly. We do lots of games: jigsaws, crafting, painting, dominoes etc.
We currently have two monthly chair exercise sessions with Chris, one ‘Music, Movement & Me’ session with Chelsea and a Singalong session with Antony.
Music is a big thing we do as it’s the last thing that people living with dementia lose so we now host The Big Sing at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School every May. This is open to the whole community; it’s a free event which is growing in popularity.
We also have up to three day trips a year decided by the attendees. So far we have been to Beamish (three times!), Bridlington, Blackpool Tower Ballroom for afternoon tea, Blackpool Illuminations, Southport, Yorkshire Wildlife Park and the North Yorks Moors Railway from Pickering to Whitby twice. We also go on boat trips locally with Safe Anchor Trust, Mirfield.
We have a free annual Christmas party for up to 100 folk, and other parties for special occasions such as the Coronation. The brilliant Crocodile Sisters do the catering.
We’re very well-connected and have built up a reputation for providing socialisation and stimulation for people living with dementia and their carers.
We’re very well-connected and have built up a reputation for providing socialisation and stimulation for people living with dementia and their carers. We’re still at West Wakefield Methodist Church who have been brilliant and so supportive. That said, we are actively looking for larger premises where we can expand and flourish – we have so many great ideas and just need space to implement them.
A Centre of Excellence for dementia in Wakefield. Open five days a week. ("I’d open seven days a week if I could.")
An outdoor area and a garden for growing produce and sharing it with the community.
Our own minibus for trips.
